Easy Berry Chia Seed Jam (Printable version)

Quick, vibrant spread made with fresh berries and chia seeds for a naturally sweetened topping.

# What You’ll Need:

→ Fruit

01 - 2 cups mixed berries (fresh or frozen; strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries)

→ Sweetener

02 - 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey (to taste)

→ Thickener

03 - 2 tablespoons chia seeds

→ Flavor (optional)

04 - ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
05 - ½ teaspoon lemon juice

# How to Make It:

01 - Place the berries in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the berries begin to break down and release their juices, about 5 minutes.
02 - Use a fork or potato masher to mash the berries to your desired consistency, whether chunky or smooth.
03 - Stir in the maple syrup (or honey), chia seeds, vanilla extract, and lemon juice (if using).
04 - Remove from heat and let the mixture sit for at least 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. The jam will thicken as the chia seeds absorb liquid.
05 - Taste and adjust sweetness if necessary by adding more sweetener.
06 - Transfer the jam to a clean jar. Allow to cool completely before sealing and refrigerating.

# Expert tips:

01 -
  • No pectin or fancy canning equipment required, just a saucepan and five minutes of active cooking time
  • The chia seeds create this beautiful gel texture naturally while packing in omega-3s and fiber
  • You can adjust the sweetness exactly to your taste and swap berries based on whatever's on sale or in season
02 -
  • Chia jam isn't shelf-stable like traditional canned jam, so it needs to live in your refrigerator and should be used within a week
  • The texture continues to develop overnight in the fridge, so if it seems slightly loose when you first make it, give it time
  • This recipe doesn't double well for canning purposes because the chia-to-liquid ratio needs to stay precise for proper setting
03 -
  • Give your chia seeds a quick mash against the side of the saucepan with your spoon to help them break down and thicken faster
  • If your berries seem especially juicy, reduce the sweetener slightly since the flavor will concentrate as the mixture cooks
  • Always let the jam cool completely before judging the final texture, since it continues thickening as it reaches refrigerator temperature
